Male Pattern Baldness

male hair loss treatmentMale pattern baldness, also known as alopecia, is the most common kind of hair loss experienced by men. The exact causes of hair loss remain unknown, but this condition is typically the result of hormonal or genetic factors. In most men, tends to begin as a receding hairline that eventually forms an “M” shape. Doctors often analyze the pattern and appearance of hair loss to diagnose male pattern baldness. While there are no known methods for preventing male pattern baldness, it can be treated with a few natural and medicinal remedies.

Natural Treatments for Male Pattern Baldness

The most common natural treatments for male pattern baldness aren't nearly as expensive as some of the medicinal treatments out there, but they may take a little more time to produce noticeable results.

Let's look at a few of them:

  • Onion Pulp – This has long been used as a treatment for male pattern baldness. Because of its high sulfur content, onion paste regularly applied to areas of thinning hair can encourage hair growth.
  • Safflower Oil – This easy-to-find oil has been shown to be effective for treating male pattern baldness because it stimulates hair follicles and improves the circulation of blood in the scalp.
  • Henna – This herb is a natural scalp conditioner and the use of henna helps to revitalize hair follicles.

Medicinal Treatments for Male Pattern Baldness

There are primarily two medications doctors prescribe in order to treat male pattern baldness – Minoxidil and Finasteride. When applied directly to the scalp, Minoxidil effectively stimulates hair follicles. For some men with male pattern baldness the solution slows hair loss while others grow new hair all together. However, if you stop using Minoxidil, then you'll see a resurgence of previous hair loss.

One of the main reasons for hair loss is the over-production of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), one of the hormones behind male pattern baldness. Finasteride is a prescription pill that suppresses the over- production of this hormone. While this treatment for male pattern baldness is slightly more effective than Minoxidil, the degree of hair loss you experienced prior to the drug returns when you cease taking it.
